7 reasons Kerala belongs on your 2026 list
Backwaters, Ayurveda and hill-station tea trails — here's why God's Own Country still steals hearts, and how to see the best of it in a week.

The Char Dham Yatra — to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — is one of Hinduism's most revered journeys. Done well, it's transformative. Here's how to prepare.
Get your medical check done early. The temples sit at 3,000 to 3,500 m, and even non-trekkers should rule out heart and breathing conditions. Carry a list of your medications.
The right window is May–June or September–October. The monsoon (July to early September) brings landslides and a higher safety risk; mid-October the temples begin to close until next year.
Know the route order. The traditional sequence — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — exists for good geographic reasons. Most reputable operators follow it.
Decide on Kedarnath helicopter. The Kedarnath trek is 16 km one way at altitude. A helicopter from Phata/Sersi/Sitapur cuts it dramatically. Book early — slots fill out months in advance during peak season.
Pack for cold even in summer. Mornings near the temples can be near-freezing. Layers, gloves, sunscreen, comfortable closed shoes, a small daypack and a torch are essential.
Food is vegetarian throughout. Carry your own dry snacks — energy bars, nuts, biscuits — for the higher-altitude stretches where dining choices thin out.
Choose your operator carefully. A senior-friendly Char Dham needs experienced mountain drivers, conservative pacing, dependable accommodation and a doctor on call. It's not a place to save money on a bad agent.
